In Memoriam: Henry (Boebsie) van der Kwast

With deep sorrow, but also with immense gratitude for all he has meant to us, we bid farewell to Henry van der Kwast, lovingly known to many as “Boebsie.” He was not only a patron of the arts but also an inspirer, a visionary, and above all, a friend to the creative spirit.

Boebsie’s love for theater, music, and film was not passive admiration. He lived for the arts. His unconditional support—both financial and moral—created opportunities and gave wings to dreams. Whether it was a young talent embarking on their first project or a large-scale festival, Boebsie was always there with a listening ear and a helping hand.

His heartbeat for Curaçao and its rich cultural community. With tireless dedication, he championed the development of local artists and events that celebrated the island’s diversity and creativity. A shining example of this is the Fleur de Marie Freedom Festival, which came to life this year thanks to his vision and enthusiasm. The upcoming Freedom Festival on May 5, 2025, will continue in his spirit as a living testament to his contributions.

Henry van der Kwast was more than a patron; he was a man with a generous heart, an unwavering belief in the power of creativity, and a friend who always stood by you. Though we must say goodbye, his spirit lives on in everything he touched and in everyone whose lives he impacted.

Boebsie had the gift of seeing art as a bridge—a force that connects and inspires people. He believed in the value of every note, every brushstroke, and every step taken on stage. While his absence leaves a void, his love and passion remain a guiding light for the community he held so dear.

Descanso, Boebsie. Your legacy is an enduring source of inspiration that will never fade.
