Elia Isenia: The first queen of Tumba

Filomena Isenia, affectionately known as Mama Elia or Doña Elia, was born in Curaçao on September 23, 1958. A singer, composer, percussionist, poet, and storyteller, she is a cultural pillar of the island inparticulalry of the west side (Bandabou), where her influence is deeply rooted in the community’s musical and spiritual identity.

In 1991, Elia made history as the first woman to win the prestigious Festival di Tumba, earning her the title of Reina di Tumba. She would go on to claim this crown two more times, forever marking her place in Curaçao’s musical heritage. Her voice, steeped in tradition, carries the rhythms of seú, tambú and tumba – three of the island’s most authentic musical forms.

But Elia’s artistry extends beyond the stage. She writes poetry, performs spoken word, acts, and shares stories that preserve and celebrate the soul of her culture. A sought-after cultural educator, she is often invited to schools, community centers and institutions to share her deep knowledge of Curaçao’s music, history and oral traditions.

Over the years, Elia has proudly represented Curaçao on international stages in Cuba, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Suriname and the Netherlands.

A true icon our island, Elia Isenia continues to inspire generations with her dedication to the rhythm, language and living history of Curaçao.
